Darryl A. Hicks Sr., a distinguished member of the Georgia Ethics Commission, and one time Georgia labor commissioner nominee has officially qualified for the Democratic nomination for Fayette County Commission, District 5 countywide seat. With a remarkable career spanning both public service and the private sector, Hicks brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of leadership to Fayette County, that will infuse the community with innovative ideas and boundless energy, all guided by a strategic focus on the future.
Throughout his career, Hicks has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service and economic development. Notably, he chaired the Fayette County Development Authority, which under his watch, successfully recruited and secured the QTS DATA Center. The DATA Center project will bring new jobs and has already yielded $75 million for investment in economic development. The project is expected to bring in $50 billion in new tax revenue over the next 30 years—all which will benefit Fayette County citizens. On top of that, Hicks played a leading role in securing USA Soccer in Fayette County, further enhancing the county's profile and economic prospects.
Hicks knows how to lead county government. In Fayette, he was chairman of the Board of Registration and Elections during the pivotal 2020 presidential elections. He also was vice chair of the Recreation Authority Board. In neighboring Fulton County, Hicks was the top appointed officer of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, as chief of staff to the chairman. Also, as a member of Fulton County’s Budget Commission, Hicks ensured there was no increase in property taxes for homeowners and local businesses. On his watch the County not only balanced its $1 billion budget, but Fulton County also maintained a surplus of more than $100 million every year that he was chief of staff.
As a candidate for the county commission, and to avoid any conflicts, Hicks will step down from the ethics commission, of which he was appointed by Governor Brian Kemp. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Hicks is deeply engaged in philanthropy and community service. He co-founded the He Ain’t Heavy Pretrial Diversion Program and has served on numerous boards and committees dedicated to improving the lives of others.
Hicks' is the recipient of many community accolades including the Carolyn Cary Dreambuilder Award, Volunteer of the Year Award from the Georgia Economic Developers Association, and as a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., he received the Charles Wesley Green Award of Merit.
"I am honored that the people of Fayette County want me to serve as their next at-large Commissioner," said Hicks. "We are fighting for Fayette's future, and working together to get it done, we will all win."
Hicks holds an M.B.A. in executive management from Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business and a Bachelor of Science Degree in accounting from Morris Brown College. He is a licensed financial professional and resides in Fayetteville with his wife Shirelle. They have three young adult children.
